File Synchronization and Local Management

Nextcloud is a cloud storage service that allows you to sync, share, and access files securely. The University of Pisa provides the service u-drive.unipi.it for staff and students.

Starting and accessing the Nextcloud client #

  1. Start the Nextcloud application installed on your system.
  2. Enter the server address: https://u-drive.unipi.it
  3. Once the authentication process starts, you will be prompted to log in via the UNIPI portal. Enter your University credentials.

File and folder synchronization #

  • At the end of the authentication, select the local folders to sync with the server.
  • Files will be automatically synchronized between the local device and the cloud area.

File upload and download #

  • Drag files into the Nextcloud folder on the system to start uploading them to the server.
  • Files will be available on all connected devices and accessible through the web portal.

File and Folder Sharing #

  • To share an item, right-click and select “Share” (available in both the client and web interface).
  • You can enter the email address of a UNIPI user or generate a public link protected by a password.

Client Settings #

The settings are accessible by selecting the Nextcloud icon in the taskbar. From here you can:

  • Add or remove synchronized folders
  • Check sync status
  • Set bandwidth limits

Using via Browser (Web) #

  • Access the address https://u-drive.unipi.it from any browser.
  • Authenticate with your UNIPI credentials.
  • The web interface allows you to manage files, folders, shares, and access applications such as calendar, contacts, etc.

Useful tips #

  • Avoid syncing large folders (larger than 5 GB) in case of slow connections.
  • Do not modify the same file from multiple devices simultaneously to prevent conflicts.
  • Preferably use the web version for quick access from public or shared devices.

Troubleshooting common issues #

  • Connection failed: check the server address and the availability of the Internet connection.
  • Files not synced: check for any conflicts or excessive sizes.
  • Authentication error: make sure that your UNIPI credentials are correct and not expired.
