History of Computer Science in Pisa
Since the 1950s, Pisa has been a key player in the history of Italian computer science: here the CEP, the first national scientific calculator, was born, along with the first degree program and the first doctorate in Computer Science. In 1986, the first Internet connection in Italy originated from Pisa, and the .it Registry took shape. This tradition continues today with advanced digital infrastructures, data centers, and research projects in HPC and artificial intelligence.
Museum of Calculation Instruments
The Museum of Calculation Instruments houses one of the most important Italian collections dedicated to the history of computing, from 19th-century arithmometers to the large calculators of the 20th century, up to personal computers. Among the most prestigious pieces are the Pisa Electronic Calculator (1961), the Olivetti ELEA, the Cray supercomputers, and the APE systems. A path that narrates the evolution of computation and technological innovation through machines that are symbols of scientific and industrial research.
